Arequipa – The White City

Arequipa is 1000 km from Lima. The city is situated at the foot of the volcano Misti, which resembles Mount Fuji in Japan. Arequipa also serves as the entrance to Colca Canyon, considered the deepest canyon in the world.

Founded in 1540 by Don García Manuel de Carvajal, Arequipa is known for its elegant colonial architecture, and the houses are all built with white volcanic stone called sillar – giving Arequipa its name – The White City. With 700,000 inhabitants, Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru. It sits at 2530 m.a.s.l. and the weather is warm and dry. Thanks to its seemingly everlasting blue sky, sunshine, and lush green lands, Arequipa always captures the hearts of travellers.

Arequipa is home to many churches, convents and old colonial houses that have been opened to the public after extensive restoration, including the beautiful monastery of Santa Catalina.
