Day by day…
Chiclayo is known for some of the most recent archaeological discoveries made in Peru – specifically in 1987 when the treasures of the Lord of Sipan were discovered. The media around the world followed the amazing discoveries of Sipan for more than a year with very special interest. These findings are considered the most successful of the 20th century; comparable to the tomb of King Tut (Tutankhamen), King of Maya Pacal, and Machupicchu. Sipan has given researchers a new understanding of the social, technological, political, and religious organization of the Mochica culture, one of the most important pre-Columbian civilizations to ever exist.
Day 1: CHICLAYO (CITY TOUR)
Before lunch we will visit the Burning Anthropological Museum as an introduction to the region. This museum has an interesting collection of Mochica culture artifacts: textiles, jewelry and pottery. It also has a replica of the recently discovered Lord of Sipan tomb. In the afternoon we will go the archeological site of Tucume and the valley of the Pyramids, (40km from the city of Chiclayo). This site belongs to the Lambayeque culture (1000 B.C. to 1350 A.D.). It contains pyramids that show a complete pre-Colombian urban complex. Immediately after our visit we will go to the town of Morrope to visit the workshops of local handicraft makers, who are well-known for their pottery. Then, we will return to the Return Hotel**
