Located in the coastal region of Peru, Chiclayo is known for some of the most recent archaeological discoveries made in Peru – specifically in 1987 when the treasures of the Lord of Sipan were discovered. The media around the world followed the amazing discoveries of Sipan for more than a year with very special interest. These findings are considered the most successful of the 20th century; comparable to the tomb of King Tut (Tutankhamen), King of Maya Pacal, and Machupicchu. Sipan has given researchers a new understanding of the social, technological, political, and religious organization of the Mochica culture, one of the most important pre-Columbian civilizations to ever exist.
