Along the way......
Choquequirao, or "The Cradle of Gold" – could a more evocative name be found for this abandoned city, surely one of the last Inca sanctuaries? Its incredible location: nestled in the mountainside and overlooking the choppy waters of the Apurimac River make it a strategic link between the Sierra and the Jungle. Choquequirao is well worth visiting despite the trek being a little demanding. The hiker will be well rewarded by the beauty of the citadel, which was discovered by the Frenchman Eugène de Sartiges in 1934.
