Day by day…
Lima was founded on 8, January 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, who was looking for a new place to build the capital city. Large houses and palaces were built in Lima during the 17th and 18th centuries, and these constructions show how important Lima was politically, administratively, and commercially. At that time, the city’s economic activity was based almost exclusively on intensive mining of gold and silver in Potosí (Bolivia), and also on the extraction of mercury from Huancavelica. Nowadays, Lima, the capital of Peru, has approximately 8 million inhabitants, without counting the peripheral villages also called pueblos jovenes. Today, nearly half of the total population of Peru is concentrated in Lima, yet the city does not stop growing. Lima is a capital of contrasts where rich and poor people live together, and 150,000 new people settle in Lima every year, hoping to build a new life in the capital.
