Chachapoyas, famous for its cloud forest – a natural preserve for a tremendous variety of flora and fauna. Another important attraction in Chachapoyas is the Kuelap fortress. Kuelap was discovered in 1843 by the archaeologist Crisostomo Nieto. Many other famous archaeologists have studied this fortress for years, but it was only a few years ago that it was finally proven that Kuelap existed as far back as 500 to 300 B.C.
