Arequipa, Southern Beauty

Lying 1000 kilometers South of Lima, Arequipa, the second largest city of Peru, is known as the White City for its beautiful white walls of sillar, a volcanic stone. Arequipa stands at an altitude of 2300 meters a.s.l, at the base of the mighty volcanoes Chachani, Misti, and Pichu Pichu.

It is often said that the city's name comes from the Quechua phrase "Ari, quepay" which means: "Yes, stay". Nowadays one assumes that the name is from Aymara "ari" (peak) + "kipa" (locative) and means something like "near the mountain". The downtown of the city, placed on the World Cultural Heritage list by UNESCO, features Mixed Baroque churches and mansions from the Colonial Period like the Monastery of Santa Catalina, a Spanish city in miniature with stone streets, beautiful patios, and plazas. Sabandía, Tiabaya, and Tingo, located among the large fields, are must see places, and the irresistible Arequipa cuisine is the perfect complement to the visit. Arequipeños like to think of themselves as being separate from, and superior to, the rest of Peru, and much of Arequipa is very traditional and regional. It is even possible to get an Arequipeño passport, although this is no more than regional pride.

Just 3 hours and 45 minutes from the capital is the Colca River valley and canyon, one of the most extraordinary destinations in the country. Throughout the region, you can see colorful pre-Incan agricultural terraces still used today for growing quinoa, corn, barley, and wheat. During the pre-Hispanic era, the department was inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas; today, the inhabitants have learned to conserve their Colonial churches in Yanque, Lari, and Madrigal, and they continue to wear their traditional clothing.
You can also do many types of adventure sports in the valley such as mountain biking, trekking, and white water rafting. And, at the Cross of the Condor, you can view the majestic flight of the condors. Other places of interest in the department are the Toro Muerto petroglyphs, the Andagua Valley of the Volcanoes, and the Cotahuasi Canyon. One of Arequipa's most important inhabitants, the Mummy Juanita, was discovered on the top of the Ampato Glacier (6280 meters high) in 1995. This mummy of a 14-years old Inca girl was remarkably well preserved for 500 years, making her one of the more important mummy finds in recent years.

Tourist interests

Main Square. Bordered by various arched walkways and the Cathedral, the Main Square possesses a beautiful bronze fountain of three plates crowned by the figure of a sixteenth century soldier. Of this person, who is called “Tuturutu”, the story says he was in charge of warning of any new event. Around the square, you see three granite portals with brick and lime bases: Portal del Cabildo (Portal de la Municipalidad), Portal de las Delicias (Portal de San Agustín), and Portal del Regocijo (Portal de Flores).

The Cathedral. It is considered one of the first seventeenth century religious monuments of the city. It is built of sillar (white volcanic stone) with a brick base. Destroyed by fire in 1844, it was rebuilt in 1868 by the Arequipa architect Lucas Poblete. He used a neoclassical style and placed the entrances of church on the flanking naves. In 2001, the building was struck hard by an earthquake, which seriously damaged its towers.

Iglesia de La Compañía and complex (The Church of the Company of Jesus Christ). This complex, made up of buildings constructed by the Jesuits for religious and living purposes, is a representative monument of the seventeenth century religious architecture (1660). The church itself rises from the center of the buildings. It was designed in 1573 by Gaspar Baez and destroyed by an earthquake in 1584. The current structure dates from 1650. Inside you find sixty-six canvases from the Cuzco School from such artists as Bernardo Bitti and Diego de la Puente.

Yanahuara Lookout. It was built in the nineteenth century and is composed of a series of sillar stone arches where the words of famous Arequipa citizens have been engraved. This spot is a wonderful viewpoint of the city and Mount Misti volcano.

District of Cayma. The village of Cayma is known as the “Balcony of Arequipa” for its advantageous location that allows the entire city to be seen. Its central plaza houses the church of San Miguel Arcángel (Saint Michael the Archangel), built in 1730 and considered an architectural jewel because of its mixed façade. In the rectory annex, the “Comedor de Bolívar” (Bolivar's dining room) is preserved where, according to legend, the Liberators used to have lunch during their stay in the town.

Misti Volcano. The Misti volcano, 5825 m.a.s.l. / 19.111 f.a.s.l. is the guardian of the city. From the summit, you can see the city of Arequipa, the Chili River valley, and the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes.

Day 1 : LIMA / RECEPTION

Reception upon arrival at Jorge Chavez airport, in Lima. Transfer to the hotel. Meals open.

Day 2 : LIMA - JULIACA (BY PLANE) – LLACHON (TITICACA)

In the early morning, transfer to the Lima airport for a flight to Juliaca.
Reception and transfer in a private vehicle to the Capachica Peninsula on Lake Titicaca. We follow a dirt road to reach the typical Peruvian village of Llachon, which overlooks Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3820 meters (11 460 feet).
Felipe and his family receive us into the heart of their community. Lunch, dinner and night at the house of a local resident. Meals open.

Day 3 : LLACHON – AMANTANI (TITICACA)

In the early morning, departure for the small port of Llachon, from where we embark on the one hour cruise to Amantani.
Reception in one of the families of the island. Lunch in the family and visit of the Incan vestiges dedicated to the ‘Pachapapa' and to the 'Pachamama'.
Lunch, dinner and night in a family. All included.

Day 4 : AMANTANI –TAQUILE – PUNO (TITICACA)

In the morning, departure by boat for a one-hour cruise to Taquile, an island of great cultural interest, where residents live in harmony with the ancestral traditions.
Visit and lunch in a typical restaurant (not included). Back to Puno in mid-afternoon. Transfer to the hotel. Meals open.

Day 5 : PUNO – CUZCO (TOURIST BUS)

Transfer to the Puno land terminal. Journey by bus to Cuzco, Navel of the Inca Empire. This itinerary allows you to enjoy wonderful landscapes along the road, via the Raya Pass, at 4320 meters above sea level (14173 feet). Visit of the Pukara Museum, the archaeological site of Raqchi and the “Sistine Chapel” of the Andes in Andahuaylillas.
Reception and transfer to the hotel in Cuzco. Lunch included (buffet lunch at Sicuani). Dinner open.
Note: visitors are not accompanied by a guide on the bus journey. However, a Spanish/English-speaking guide, exclusive to the bus company, participates to the journey and gives information along the way.

Day 6 : CUZCO / COMPLETE CITY TOUR

Day dedicated to the discovery of Cuzco and its surrounding areas. In the morning, visit of the archaeological sites overlooking the city: Tambomachay, Q'enko, Pukapucara and Sacsayhuaman. We then walk down to the San Blas quarter (the artists' place). We pass by the famous 12 angles stone and continue to the San Pedro market to familiarize ourselves with local products.
In the afternoon, visits of the Koricancha (Temple of the Sun), and of the Cathedral, exhibiting some paintings from the School of Cuzco and many goldsmith's art, silver and precious stones treasures.
Transfer to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. Meals open.

Day 7 : CUZCO – PISAC – MARAS - OLLANTAYTAMBO – SACRED VALLEY

In the morning, departure in a private vehicle for a day dedicated to the discovery of the Sacred Valley. First stop at the ruins of Pisac. Visit of the site and walk around the handicraft market.
Typical lunch and stop in a ceramic workshop in Urubamba (Ayllu if opens). Continuation of the journey to Maras: salt mines in the middle of the Cordillera! Walk down to the Urumbamba River where the vehicle awaits us. Continuation to the Incan village of Ollantaytambo. Visit of the fortress. Lunch included. Dinner open.

Day 8 : SACRED VALLEY - OLLANTAYTAMBO - AGUASCALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU - CUZCO

In the morning, departure from the train station of Ollantaytambo for the journey to Aguascalientes.
Direct connection to the shuttle service that will drive you to the citadel of Machu Picchu.
Day dedicated to the visit of the site; one of the wonders of the world, discovered in 1911 by the American anthropologist Hiram Bingham. Meals open.
Note: depending on availabilities, the return journey can be done by train to Ollantaytambo and then by private vehicle to Cuzco.

Day 9 : CUZCO – LIMATAMBO – CURUHUASI – CACHORA - CAPULIYOC – CHIQUISCA / TREK

Departure from Cuzco to Cachora by vehicle. On the way, we cross important granite deposits. We pass near the Incan archaeological remains of Saywite. The departure point of the trek is Cachora, at an altitude of 2850 meters a.s.l. (el. 9,350 feet).
After going over the Capuliyoc Pass, we descend to Chiquisca Camp. All included.
Hiking time: around 7 hours; Climate: subtropical.

Day 10 : CHIQUISCA – PLAYA ROSALINA – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAU / TREK

The ascent of the highest part of the region begins at the bridge of Choquequirao (el. 1500 m.a.s.l. / el. 4,920 feet). Crossing of the villages of Santa Rosa and Maranpata (el. 2850 m.a.s.l. / el. 9,350 feet).
Arrival at the site of Choquequirao, Bivouac. All included.
Hiking time: around 7 hours; Climate: warm in the day and cold at night.

Day 11 : CHOQUEQUIRAU – SAN IGNACIO – CARMEN / TREK

After watching the sunrise at the citadel, departure for the exploration of the ruins.
Walk along the surrounding trails, to appreciate the incredible panorama of the Apurimac Canyon. Arrival in Carmen, via Playa (beach) San Ignacio. Night in a camp at an altitude of 2000 meters a.s.l. (el. 5,661 feet). All included.
Hiking time: around 5 hours; Climate: Subtropical with mosquitoes.

Day 12 : CARMEN – HACIENDA TAMBO BAMBA - PACOBAMBA – HUANIPACA - CUZCO/ TREK

Visit of the Hacienda Tambo Bamba, offering rich agricultural production.
Continuation of the journey via the community of Pacobamba. Arrival in Huanipaca, at an altitude of 3150 meters a.s.l. (el. 10,334 feet). Return by road to Cuzco and arrival at the hotel. Lunch included. Dinner open.
Hiking time: around 5 hours; Climate: moderate.

Day 13 : CUZCO / DAY OPEN

Day open in Cuzco, at the heart of the Inca Empire. Night in hotel. Meals open.

Day 14 : CUZCO – PUERTO MALDONADO (BY PLANE) – LODGE / GROUP

Transfer to the airport for a flight with destination Puerto Maldonado, the getaway to Amazonia.
Reception and transfer to the Lodge located forty minutes away by boat. In the afternoon, walk in the forest to familiarize ourselves with the local flora and fauna. Later, nocturnal photo safari to observe caimans.

Day 15 : OBSERVATION OF PARROTS – MONKEY ISLAND – LAKE SANDOVAL / GROUP

In the early morning, observation of parrots that gather by the dozen, at the Collpa de los Loros. Breakfast and then departure for Monkey Island.
Continuation by foot, for a 5-mile walk to Lake Sandoval to observe giant otters, kingfishers and even piranhas. Night at the Lodge.

Day 16 : LODGE – PUERTO MALDONADO – LIMA (BY PLANE) / GROUP

Open day. Possibility to visit the fruit market of Puerto Maldonado, and then transfer to the airport. Reception in Cuzco or Lima and transfer to the hotel.

Arequipa and surroundings

COMPLETE CITY TOUR

Day dedicated to the exploration of the White City. In the morning, visit of the colonial center (Plaza de Armas, Cathedral, church and the Compaña Convent) and of the Santa Catalina Convent, genuine city within the city with its alleys bordered with colored houses.
Lunch in a picanteria (included). In the afternoon, excursion to the watchtowers of Yanahuara and Cayma, offering a panoramic view over the fabulous surrounding volcanoes.
The end of the day will be dedicated to the visit of the Sanctuarios Andinos Museum, well known for its collection of mummies found in the ice of the surrounding mountains, where they had been preserved for more than five hundred years. Back to the hotel. Dinner open.

MIRADOR AND COLONIAL CENTER VISITS - HALF DAY

CAMPIÑA (EXPLORATION)

In the morning, departure in a private vehicle for the countryside of Arequipa. We admire the landscape with the Volcano Misti in the background.
Visit of various colonial sites such as: Chilina, Selva Alegre, Miraflores, the old village of Paucarpata, the Windmill of Sabandía, Tingo, the watchtower of Sachaca, Puente de Fierro (Iron Bridge - designed by Eiffel), and the Church of Yanahuara. Back to the hotel in the beginning of the afternoon.

TORO MUERTO – QUERULPA (EXPLORATION)

In the early morning, departure in a private vehicle for Toro Muerto located in the fertile Majes Valley. The site, in the middle of the desert, reveals thousands of petroglyphs over 5 km2, carved on the volcanic stones.
Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, observation of dinosaur footprints that have been preserved in the rock for millions of years, in Querulpa. Back to the hotel in Arequipa at the end of the day. Lunch included. Dinner open.

CANAHUAS PAMPAS– SUMBAY CAVE – IMATA FOREST

In the morning, departure for the Pampa Cañahuas Nature Preserve, in order to observe camelids, including the graceful vicuña. Then, discovery of the rock paintings of the Sumbay Caves, located at 13,123 feet of elevation. Lastly, walk in the ‘Stone Forest' of Imata where the strange rock formations leave the visitor skeptical. Transfer to the hotel in Arequipa. Cold lunch included. Dinner open. Please note: 149 miles for the whole journey – 9-hour of travel time in total.

YURI CANYON/ TREK

In the early morning, departure in a private vehicle for Yuri, a small village located 19 miles away from Arequipa. 3-hour hike in the narrow canyon, surrounded by lunar landscapes.
The hike includes a walk in the thermal waters of the river until the Capua waterfall (98 feet high). Back to Yura to enjoy the hot springs. Lunch in a typical restaurant.
Back to the hotel in Arequipa. Meals open.

Day 2 : LIMA – HUARAZ (BUS SERVICE)

Transfer to the Lima land terminal. Journey by bus with destination Huaraz, main departure point for the numerous treks in the White Cordillera and Huayhuash.

Day 3 : HUARAZ– HUASCARAN TOUR – CHACAS

In the early morning, departure in a private vehicle for the small village of Chacas.
At Yungay, turn off at junction to take a road crossing the White Cordillera in order to reach the East side of the valley. Panoramic view over one of the most famous lakes of the region: the Lake Llanganuco.
Walk around this unique site. Then, we go over a pass at 4767 meters above sea level (el. 15635 feet a.s.l.) then descend to 3500 m.a.s.l. (el. 11480 feet a.s.l.) on the other side of the Cordillera. Arrival at the hotel in Chacas in the late afternoon. Meals open.

Day 4 : CHACAS – PUNTA OLIMPICA - HUARAZ

In the morning, departure in a private vehicle for Huaraz.
Crossing over the Pass “Punta Olimpica”, at 4890 m.a.s.l. (el. 16039 feet a.s.l.), one of the highest tracks in Peru. Arrival at the hotel in Huaraz in the late afternoon. Meals open.

Day 5 : HUARAZ – LAGOON 69 – HUARAZ / TREK

In the morning, departure by private vehicle towards the Lagoon 69, situated at the base of Chacraraju (culminating at an altitude of 6112 meters a.s.l / el. 20,052 feet).
Great view over the surrounding glaciers, including Huascaran, culminating at 6768 meters a.s.l (el. 22,204 feet). Return by road and transfer to the hotel in Huaraz. Cold lunch included. Dinner open.
Hiking time: around 6 hours; Distance: 13 miles;
Elevation gain: + 650 meters (2,132 feet) / – 650 meters (2,132 feet).

Day 6 : HUARAZ – LIMA (BUS SERVICE)

Transfer to the Huaraz land terminal. Bus journey to Lima, the Peruvian capital city. Reception in the late afternoon and transfer to the hotel. Meals open.

Day 7 : LIMA - JULIACA (BY PLANE) - SILLUSTANI – PUNO (TITICACA)

On the way, visit of the Chullpas de Sillustani, funerary towers of circular shape built in stone, some of which reaching up to thirty-six feet in height. Arrival at the hotel in Puno. Meals open.

Day 8 :PUNO – UROS – AMANTANI (TITICACA)

In the morning, transfer to the port of Puno to embark for the islands of Uros and Amantani. After a 25-minute cruise, we visit of the floating islands. These islands are not natural; they have been built by the Uros tribe, whose main activity is fishing. We then head for Amantani (around 2½-hour cruise).
Lunch at a local resident's place. In the afternoon, visit of sites dedicated to the Pachamama and the Pachapapa.
Lunch, dinner and night at a local resident's place (all included).

In the early morning, departure in a private vehicle for Molleptata, at an altitude of 3000 meters a.s.l (el. 9,842 feet). We continue to Cruzpata, meeting place with the trekking team. At mid-morning, departure of the trek while observing the surrounding glaciers of Tucarhuay (5450 meters a.s.l / el. 17,880 feet) and Salkantay (6264 meters a.s.l / el. 20,551 feet).
Lunch in the village of Silcacancha, and continuation by foot to Soraypampa. Night in a camp. Lunch and dinner included.
Transfer: around 4 hours; Hiking time: around 6 hours;
Elevation gain: from 3000 meters a.s.l (el. 9,842 feet) to 3700 meters a.s.l (el. 12,139 feet).

Day 14 : SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PASS - ARRAYAN PATA / TREK

In the early morning, departure for the most difficult day of the trek.
We go over the Salkantay Pass, at an altitude of 4600 meters a.s.l (el. 15,091 feet). Then, we relax and have lunch. Continuation of the walk to the Arrayan Pata camp, at an altitude of 3450 meters a.s.l (el. 11,318 feet). All included.
Hiking time: around 8 hours;
Elevation gain: 3700 meters a.s.l (el. 12,139 feet) -4600 meters a.s.l (el. 15,091 feet) - 3450 meters a.s.l (el. 11,318 feet).

Day 15 : ARRAYAN PATA – COLLPAPAMPA - WIÑAYPOCO - LA PLAYA / TREK

An unforgettable hiking day thanks to the diversity of the vegetation we come across.
Descent into the yungas, intermediary forest between the Sierra and the Amazonia, and arrival at the village of Wiñaypoco. Continuation to the Santa Teresa River to observe the different types of orchids and enjoy the surrounding waterfalls.
Arrival at La Playa camp, at an altitude of 2110 meters a.s.l (el. 6,922 feet). All included.
Hiking time: around 7 hours;
Elevation gain: 3450 meters a.s.l (el. 11,318 feet) - 2110 meters a.s.l (el. 6,922 feet).

Day 16 : LA PLAYA – LLACTAPATA – HYDROELECTRICA - AGUASCALIENTES / TREK

Hiking day in the direction of the archaeological remnants of Llactapata, and then descent to the hydroelectric plant, located at an altitude of 1950 meters a.s.l (el. 6,397 feet).
Train journey to go to the village of Aguascalientes. Arrival at the hotel. Lunch included. Dinner open.
Hiking time: around six hours

In the early morning, departure with the shuttle service to reach the citadel of Machu Picchu.
Day dedicated to the visit of the site: one of the wonders of the world, discovered in 1911 by the American anthropologist Hiram Bingham. In the afternoon, return by train to Cuzco. Reception and transfer to the hotel. Meals open.
Suggestion: Ascent to the peak of Huayna Picchu (make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes and that you are not carrying to much luggage. People suffering from vertigo should not participate) or climb to the La Puerta del Sol.

Day 18 : CUZCO – LIMA (BY PLANE)

Transfer to the Cuzco airport for a flight to Lima, the Peruvian capital.
Reception and transfer to the hotel. Meals open.

The Colca Canyon offers a very interesting geography. Its enormity and depth (more than 3,000 meters from top to bottom) is the result of a massive cataclysm, which occurred over a million years ago... this canyon is no more than a scar from an earthly wound … Since then Man has left his trace… ancient Andean civilizations built on its steep sides over centuries and created hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of terraced fields… all of which are majestically guarded by the soaring King of the Air... the Condor...

Day 1 : AREQUIPA – COLCA CANYON – NIGHT IN A COMMUNITY

In the morning, departure in a private vehicle for the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest of the world with 3680 meters below sea level (el. 12070 feet a.s.l). Crossing of the National Reserve and the Patapampa Pass.
On the way, we admire wonderful landscapes and possibly observe vicunas and other camelids. Open lunch on the way. In the afternoon, visit of the market of Chivay and bath in the hot springs of the village.
Transfer to the village of Coporaque and arrival in the families of the community. Dinner included.
Note: entrance fees for the hot springs to be paid directly on the site.

Day 2 : COPORAQUE – CRUZ DEL CONDOR - AREQUIPA

After an early breakfast, we head to the villages of Ichupampa, Lari and Madrigal and arrive at Cruz Del Condor, at the heart of the Colca, to observe the condors (two hours stay on the site).
Then, continuation of the journey to Chivay passing through the Antahuilque watchtowers (another viewpoint to observe the width of the Canyon and its terraced crops); Choquetico and its pre-Inca cemetery (with hanged graves) and Maca, Achoma and Yanque with their colonial churches of baroque style. Lunch open in Chivay.
Back to Arequipa in the early afternoon. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner open.

Day 1 : LIMA / RECEPTION

Reception upon arrival at Jorge Chavez airport, in Lima.
Transfer to the hotel. Meals open.

Day 2 : LIMA – AREQUIPA (BY PLANE) – HALF-DAY CITY TOUR

Transfer to the Lima airport for a flight with destination Arequipa, the White City. Reception and transfer to the hotel.
Afternoon dedicated to the discovery of the city: visit of the colonial center and the Santa Catalina Convent. Back to the hotel at the end of the day. Meals open.

Day 3 : AREQUIPA – CABANACONDE (el. 3290 m.a.s.l.) – SAN JUAN DE CHUCCHO (el. 2400 m.a.s.l.)/ TREK

Departure in a private vehicle for the Colca Canyon. We reach Cabanaconde.
We start our hike in the heart of the Pampa San Miguel after lunch. We descend along the Canyon until we reach the small village of San Juan de Chuccho. Night in a rustic Auberge (basic comfort). Meals included.
Hiking time: about 3 hours

Day 4 : SAN JUAN DE CHUCCHO (el. 2400 m.a.s.l.)/ – SANGALLE (el. 2220 m.a.s.l. /OASIS) / TREK

Program of the day: visit of the village of Tapay, via hamlet where locals grow regional fruits, and harvest the cochinilla. Lunch in Cosnihura in the house of a local inhabitant.
Arrival at the Oasis of Sangalle where we relax in the thermal waters. Night in a rustic Auberge (basic comfort). Meals included.
Hiking time: about 5 hours

Day 5 : OASIS – CABANACONDE – CHIVAY - AREQUIPA / TREK

Early departure for Cabanaconde. We then head for the Cruz del Condor (30mn from Cabanaconde). We arrive at Cruz Del Condor to observe the condors (two-hour stay on the site).
Then, continuation of the journey, following the left bank of the river, to Chivay. Arrival in the hotel at Yanque or Chivay. Option of a bath in the hot springs of the village.
Lunch open. In the early afternoon, we catch the local bus for Arequipa and transfer to the hotel.
Hiking time : about 4 hours environ

Day 6 : AREQUIPA – PUNO (TITICACA) (BY BUS)

In the morning, transfer to the Arequipa land terminal.
Journey by bus to Puno, town located on the shores of Lake Titicaca. This itinerary gives you the opportunity to discover the rather unusual landscapes of the Altiplano.
Reception and private transfer to the typical village of Llachon, which overlooks Lake Titicaca, at 3820 meters above sea level (12532 feet). Felipe and his family welcome us in their community. Evening meal and night in the community. Lunch open.
Note 1: visitors are not accompanied during the journey. 5-hour of travel time.
Note 2: timetable and specific transport company details to be communicated to visitors upon arrival in Peru.

Day 7 : PUNO – UROS – AMANTANI – (TITICACA)

Day 8 : LLACHON – TAQUILE - PUNO (TITICACA)

In the morning, departure for the small port of Llachon, the start of the one hour cruise to Taquile, an island of great cultural interest, where residents live in harmony with the ancestral traditions.
Visit and lunch in a typical restaurant (not included). Back to Puno by boat at the end of the afternoon. Reception and transfer to the hotel. Meals open.

Day 9 : PUNO – CUZCO (TOURIST BUS)

Transfer to the Puno land terminal. Journey by bus to Cuzco, Navel of the Inca Empire.
This itinerary allows you to enjoy wonderful landscapes along the road, via the Raya Pass, at 4320 meters above sea level (14173 feet). Visit of the Pukara Museum, the archaeological site of Raqchi and the “Sistine Chapel” of the Andes in Andahuaylillas.
Reception and transfer to the hotel in Cuzco. Lunch included (buffet lunch at Sicuani). Dinner open.
Note: visitors are not accompanied by a guide on the bus journey. However, a Spanish/English-speaking guide, exclusive to the bus company, participates to the journey and gives information along the way.

Day 10 : CUZCO / COMPLETE CITY TOUR

Day dedicated to the discovery of Cuzco and its surrounding areas.
In the morning, visit of the archaeological sites overlooking the city: Tambomachay, Q'enko, Pukapucara and Sacsayhuaman. We then walk down to the San Blas quarter (the artists' place). We pass by the famous 12 angles stone and continue to the San Pedro market to familiarize ourselves with local products.
In the afternoon, visits of the Koricancha (Temple of the Sun), and of the Cathedral, exhibiting some paintings from the School of Cuzco and many goldsmith's art, silver and precious stones treasures. Transfer to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. Meals open.

Day 11 : CUZCO – PISAC – MARAS - CHINCHERO – CUZCO

In the morning, departure in a private vehicle for a day dedicated to the discovery of the Sacred Valley. First stop at the ruins of Pisac. Visit of the site and walk around the handicraft market. Typical lunch and stop in a ceramic workshop in Urubamba (Ayllu if opens). Continuation of the journey to Maras: salt mines in the middle of the Cordillera!
Continuation of the journey to Chinchero to visit its colonial church. Visit of the textile association Awana Wasi Tocapo.
In the late afternoon, transfer to the hotel in Cuzco. Lunch included. Dinner open.

Day 12 : CUZCO - MOLLEPATA – CRUZPATA – SILCACANCHA - SORAYAMPA / TREK

In the early morning, departure in a private vehicle for Molleptata, at an altitude of 3000 meters a.s.l (el. 9,842 feet). We continue to Cruzpata, meeting place with the trekking team.
At mid-morning, departure of the trek while observing the surrounding glaciers of Tucarhuay (5450 meters a.s.l / el. 17,880 feet) and Salkantay (6264 meters a.s.l / el. 20,551 feet). Lunch in the village of Silcacancha, and continuation by foot to Soraypampa. Night in a camp. Lunch and dinner included.
Transfer: around 4 hours; Hiking time: around 6 hours;
Elevation gain: from 3000 meters a.s.l (el. 9,842 feet) to 3700 meters a.s.l (el. 12,139 feet).

Day 13 : SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PASS - ARRAYAN PATA / TREK

Juanita, the Ice Maiden

The famous mummy Juanita, also called the Ice Maiden, can be admired at the Santuarios Andinos Museum

In 1995, during an ascent of Mount Ampato (at 6380 meters of altitude), Johan Reinhard, an American archaeologist and his Peruvian climbing partner Zarate, during an expedition financed by the National Geographic Magazine, found inside the summit crater a bundle that had fallen down from an Inca site when the ridge had collapsed due to the melting caused by volcanic ash that has fallen from the nearby erupting volcano of Sabancaya. To their astonishment, the bundle turned out to contain a remarkably well-preserved mummy of a young girl. In addition, they found—strewn about the mountain slope down which the mummy had fallen—many items that had been left as offerings to the Inca gods, such as statues and food items. She laid wrapped in textiles in the fetal position surrounded by scattered pottery shards, llama bones, corn kernels, cloth pieces and a small spondylus shell figurine.
A couple of days later, the mummy and the objects were taken to Arequipa; the remains of the mummy were initially kept in a special refrigerator.

The Santa Catalina Convent

Located in the center of Arequipa, Santa Catalina is the pride of its townspeople, covering an area of more than 29,426 square meters. It is a masterpiece of colonial architecture, and houses some of the finest examples of Spanish American religious art.

Santa Catalina was built in 1580. The founder of the monastery was a rich widow, Maria de Guzman. The tradition of the time indicated that the second son or daughter of a family would enter religious service, and the convent accepted only women from high-class Spanish families. Each nun at Santa Catalina had between one and four servants or slaves, and the nuns invited musicians to perform in the convent, gave parties and generally lived a lavish lifestyle.

It was opened to the world nearly 400 years later, in 1970. Since then, visitors have been able to stroll through the streets and cloisters that during colonial times were the refuge of female nobility who had decided to shut themselves away from the world and dedicate themselves entirely to prayer.
Possibly because of their aristocratic background and the wealth of their families, the convent was decorated with valuable works painted by the Quito and Cuzco Schools, including many others signed by grand masters from Italy and Spain, while special attention was paid to the finishes of the buildings.

The main square, whose gates still preserve the magic of their fine finishes and images carved from wood, features a fountain brought from Spain and crafted entirely from granite. The ochre and blue colors of its streets and patios -named after Spanish cities- are decorated with bright flowers such as scarlet geraniums. Today, it takes around an hour to tour Santa Catalina, an hour to discover centuries of tradition.
