Trujillo is the capital of the province of La Libertad and is located in the fertile valley of the Moche River. The Moche Valley mainly produces sugarcane, asparagus and a number of grains. The region is also a very important cultural centre, because many of the most important archaeological complexes of northern Peru are located here. This province was settled by fishermen and farmers centuries ago, and was the centre of the Mochica civilization during the 6th century. The citadel of Chan Chan, located just 4 km from Trujillo shows how important and powerful the Mochica and Chimu civilizations were. During Inca Tupac Yupanqui’s reign in the 15th century, the Chimu civilization was integrated into the Tawantinsuyo Empire.
